- For optimal nutrient absorption – After procedures such as the Gastric Bypass, there may be a reduction in the body’s ability to absorb fat-soluble vitamins like A, D, E & K. The healthy fats when added to daily diet, optimally aid nutrient absorption.
Satiety – Portion control and avoiding overeating is an important aspect to manage after the surgery. Including healthy fats into the diet is a great way to stay fuller for longer.
Good source of energy – Due to reduced calorie intake after bariatric surgery, the body needs healthy fats that can fill the gap and provide a concentrated source of calories and energy.
Maintain cell health – Fats are an essential component of cell membrane. The monounsaturated fats found in olive oil and avocado or polyunsaturated fats in fatty fish, flax seeds, walnuts, and certain saturated fats like coconut oil help maintain the structural integrity and functionality of cell membranes.
Heart and brain health – The omega-3 fatty acids found in several healthy fat sources are known to support heart and brain health. The anti-inflammatory properties can support cognitive functions and reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases.
Skin and hair health – Dietary fats can maintain the skin’s moisture barrier. They provide a protective shield against environmental factors and prevent dryness and breakage. The anti-inflammatory properties in omega-3 fatty acids can strengthen the hair follicles leading to stronger, shinier hair and prevent hair loss. After bariatric surgery, this could be a significant factor to boost the self-esteem and confidence.
Wound healing – The healthy fats support the body’s natural healing process. Including healthy fats in the diet aid quick healing of incisions, wounds, or scars resulting from the surgery.
It is beneficial to include monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, but limit saturated and avoid trans fats that can have adverse effects on health. That said, the specific dietary recommendations after bariatric surgery can vary depending on the kind of surgery and individual needs. It is hence crucial to closely work with a registered dietician to personalize your meal plan.
