A fitness routine and an active lifestyle is crucial
Designing a fitness routine depends on individual goals, preferences, and fitness level. However, when we say ‘every workout counts’, it is important to note that we mean an active lifestyle, as not every workout may contribute equally to your fitness goals.
Here are a few tips to create a balanced and effective fitness routine –
Set clear goals – Defining realistic goals is most important while embarking on your fitness journey. Aim for gradual and sustainable progress rather than drastic changes. For instance, for overweight or obese individuals or after bariatric surgery, the realistic goals can include weight loss, improved mobility, better sleep, increased stamina, and overall well-being.
Identify short-term and long-term goals – For short term goals, look at meaningful indicators of progress and attainable milestones such as better flexibility, better energy levels, enhanced mood, etc. Long-term goals can include achieving and managing healthy weight, improved cardiovascular health, mindful and sustainable eating habits, healthy lifestyle choices, and a better quality of life. Celebrate all your milestones, no matter how small or big. This will keep you motivated to stay disciplined.
Include a variety of exercises for overall health – Incorporating aerobic exercises like brisk walking, running, cycling or swimming can enhance cardiovascular health and can help improve balance. Muscle strength and endurance are crucial for overall health, especially for obese individuals. Regular strength training can tone the muscles, support joint health, and boost metabolism. Flexibility and mobility exercises such as Yoga can improve a range of motion and enhance overall flexibility.
Measure your goals – Improved cardiovascular health can be measured in terms of lower blood pressure, improved cholesterol levels, and better heart health. Better flexibility can be assessed in terms of an increased ability to perform daily activities, better posture, reduced risk of injuries, etc. An enhanced quality of life can be seen by the way of better sleep, feeling more energetic, and experiencing an overall sense of well-being.
Let physical activity become a habit – Consistency is key for seeing results. Make physical activity a lifestyle and keep at it every single day to witness the change and stay fit.
A word of caution: Before starting any new fitness routine, it is important to consult with a healthcare professional or a fitness expert, especially when there are existing health conditions. It is also important to pay attention to the body and how it feels during and after the exercise, and keep the healthcare expert posted about any changes.
