Bariatric weight loss treatment options such as vertical sleeve gastrectomy are the go-to solutions for people looking to lose excess weight and regain good health. Apart from helping patients lose weight, bariatric surgical treatments also help manage and even eliminate most underlying health conditions associated with being overweight, obese, or morbidly  obese.

One health condition that is significantly improved by sleeve gastrectomy is overactive bladder syndrome.  A study conducted by Italian scientists showed that patients who successfully shed excess weight through bariatric procedures such as gastric sleeve surgery are more likely to record marked improvements in comorbidities associated with excess weight. Let’s take a closer look at the findings from this study and what they mean for bariatric surgery and the management of OAB Syndrome.

Study Focus

The study, published in the Journal of Surgical Research, focused on how obese patients who successfully lose weight through Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy (LSG) experience positive outcomes with regards to Overactive Bladder (OAB) Syndrome.  LSG was chosen as it is well known to improve lots of comorbidities associated with excess weight. It focused on 120 morbidly obese men and women who were classified according to their medical history as well as 120 control men and women.

Notable Findings from the Study

The study noted the following crucial findings:

  •  OAB Symptoms are prevalent among morbidly obese patients, although the condition affects more women than men.
  •  Significant improvements in the symptoms as well as significant weight loss were recorded 180 days post surgery.

This confirms the long-held notion that surgical treatment options for obesity and morbid obesity such as vertical sleeve gastrectomy also go a long way in alleviating most comorbidities related to the condition.
