There is a pattern for average weight loss with gastric sleeve

The average weight loss with gastric sleeve has a few milestones that were more apparent at three months, six months, 12 months, and 18 months.

  • Most weight loss occurred in the first three months.
  • Patients should lose up to 50 ā€“60 % of their excess body weight by six months.
  • They may lose a further 10 ā€“20% Excess body weigh in the next 6 months
  • In 12 months, most patients will have finished their weight loss process
  • When weight loss reaches 18 months, it typically plateaus. Weight loss can be accelerated and facilitated by adding something to the patientā€™s routine. With a healthy diet, lifestyle, and exercise routines, the patient should be able to maintain this weight.

What Is The Average Weight Loss With A Gastric Sleeve?

In 12-18 months, patients with gastric sleeve surgery typically lose 50% to 70% of their excess body weight. BMI, weight-related health issues, age, and other factors can influence patientsā€™ results. Exercise and dietary restrictions may help patients lose more weight if followed diligently.

The average weight loss with a gastric sleeve is helpful to know if you are considering weight loss surgery. Depending on starting BMI, weight-related health conditions, and lifestyle, results may vary significantly from patient to patient.

The non-surgical endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty and gastric sleeve surgery can reduce obesity-related weight. Depending on the procedure, weight loss may take longer or longer, but if the patient is diligent, they can still achieve their goal and maintain it.

What Is Gastric Sleeve Surgery?

Most weight loss surgeries performed today are laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomies (LSG). Stomach size is reduced by 70-80% with a gastric sleeve.  As a result, fewer calories and nutrients enter the digestive system.

Compared to gastric bypass surgery, gastric sleeve surgery is less complicated, and has minimal risks. Recovery from LSG typically takes 4-6 weeks after a 1-2-day hospital stay.

What Is The Average Weight Loss With Gastric Sleeve In The First Month?

A significant incentive for gastric sleeve surgery is that patients lose weight rapidly and dramatically in the first month. Gastric sleeve surgery can help one lose weight quickly, but only for the first month. The body consumes and utilizes fewer calories in the few weeks leading up to surgery and for the next month.

Usually, patients start a complete liquid diet two weeks before surgery, followed by a clear liquid diet two days before and after surgery. In the first few months, the patient gradually adds soft foods and works up to solids.

Patients need a lot of determination and perseverance during this time as itā€™s one of the most challenging times despite the dramatic weight loss. It is well worth it since patients usually lose between 10% -20% of their excess body weight in the first month.

Those suffering from weight-related health problems may see some relief. According to research, the more excess weight an individual carries, the more weight they lose in the beginning. The results may differ from person to person, but statistics show these are reasonably representative.

How Is Excess Body Weight Vs. Total Body Weight Calculated?

Choosing your goal weight (also called ideal weight) is the first step in calculating excess body weight. To reach your goal weight, subtract your current weight from your ā€œideal weight.ā€ BMI calculators provide healthy weight ranges based on a personā€™s BMI.
