You’re not alone if you have struggled with obesity. About 28.1% of adults are obese and nearly two out of three (63.4%) are overweight. The percentage rises with age. To add more fuel to the fire, obese individuals are 10 times more likely to suffer from Type 2 Diabetes, the most common form of diabetes, which in many cases can be treated

There has been an increase in obesity over the past few decades, and with that, the number of Type 2 Diabetes cases.

Furthermore, obesity no longer affects just older individuals. Researchers have noted a steady increase in childhood obesity over the past couple of decades, and they believe this is contributing to the rise in type 2 diabetes cases. The situation is indeed alarming. It is so prevalent that researchers have coined the term “Diabesity” to describe the phenomenon, a combined burden of obesity and diabetes and fear that it may become epidemic in the future.

Type 2 Diabetes and Obesity: What You Need to Know

Obesity is defined as having a weight greater than what is considered normal. Insulin resistance can be caused by excess weight, especially fat around your belly. This occurs when your body cannot produce enough insulin, a hormone necessary to process energy in your cells.

Insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes often go hand in hand, despite the fact that many people are unaware they are insulin resistant. People with type 2 diabetes are at risk for a number of life-threatening conditions, such as heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, etc. The condition can also cause circulatory problems, high blood pressure, nervous system disorders, blindness, infections that are difficult to cure, impotence, etc.

Even if you don’t have type 2 diabetes, being obese puts you at a higher risk of other conditions, such as breathing problems, cancer, GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), arthritis, etc.

Type 2 diabetes and obesity are complex conditions on their own. Together, they pose a serious threat to health. Managing type 2 diabetes can be achieved by healthy eating and lifestyle management for some people, but others require treatment with diabetes medicines, including pills and insulin injections.

Diabetic Reversal: How to Get Started

You can overcome the effects of obesity and reduce the need for diabetes medications by adding more physical activity and losing a modest amount of weight. Having said that, if it were that simple, only one in three adults would be obese. Obesity is caused by many factors, and getting down to a healthy weight is not always a calories in, calories out situation.

To help you get started, here are a few strategies:

  • Decide on a Realistic Weight Loss Goal.

  • You may be able to reduce your need for diabetes medications by losing 5% of your total weight. Diet, exercise, and support are all essential components of effective weight-loss programs. Discuss your weight loss program with your physician and play the long game.

  • Consider a Support Group.

  • When you need support, your friends, family, and others who are working to lose weight can inspire you and lift you up. Whether it’s an online support group or an app, try to find others who share your goals. Consult your doctor, a dietitian, or a nutritionist if you don’t know where to turn for assistance. Join Perth Bariatric Support Group hosted by Perth Surgical & Bariatrics to talk and learn about similar and other issues with people who know what those are like.

  • Consider bariatric surgery.

  • Research has found that bariatric surgery may be able to reverse type 2 diabetes and reduce reliance or completely stop diabetes medications. Additionally, you may be able to resolve obesity-related issues such as sleep apnea and hypertension.

The criteria for bariatric surgery may be met if you are significantly overweight, have attempted weight loss unsuccessfully in the past, or suffer from an obesity-related condition. Consult your doctor for more information.
