Obesity poses a real risk to the development and progression of type 2 diabetes and weight loss is the key component of diabetes management. Bariatric surgery results in significant weight loss and remission of diabetes in most patients. Doctors also say that bariatric surgery can lower the risk of heart attack and stroke.
Post bariatric surgery, glycemic control is restored by a combination of enforced caloric restriction, increased insulin secretion, and enhanced insulin sensitivity. Although the perception about bariatric surgery is, it’s invasive and risky, the recent research shows that people who are obese and have diabetes may indeed benefit from the surgery in more ways than just weight loss and improved glycemic control.
Gastric sleeve surgery, also known as the vertical sleeve gastrectomy, is almost always done as a minimally invasive procedure using a laparoscope. It’s a restrictive weight loss surgery procedure. This laparoscopic surgery is performed using a long, thin tube that is inserted into your abdomen through several small incisions. The tube will have a light and a tiny camera attached to it as well as various instruments. During surgery, about 85% of the existing stomach is removed leaving a portion of the stomach that is about the size and shape of a banana, or sleeve.
Gastric sleeve surgery helps you lose weight in two ways. Your stomach is significantly reduced so you feel fuller earlier and stop eating sooner. It means you take in fewer calories. The second benefit is the part of your stomach that produces ghrelin (hunger hormone) is removed so you are not as hungry.
Gastric bypass surgery refers to a surgical procedure that divides the stomach into a smaller upper pouch and a much larger lower remnant pouch. Then, the small intestine is rearranged to connect to both. Roux-en-Y gastric bypass is a type of gastric bypass that is designed to reduce the amount of food you are able to eat by cutting away a part of the stomach. Gastric bypass is a permanent procedure that helps patients achieve and maintain weight loss goals.
Gastric bypass surgery comes with several potential benefits. Patients experience a shorter recovery and less scarring with laparoscopic surgery than with traditional open surgery. At the same time, remember that laparoscopic surgery is not always recommended for every patient. In many cases, surgeons can’t decide whether the procedure is suitable for the patient or not until the surgery is underway.
SIPS (Stomach Intestinal Pylorus) which is also known as SADI -S (Single anastomosis Duodeno- ileal Bypass with Sleeve gastrectomy) is an effective weight loss procedure. SIPS (SADI -S) combines a vertical sleeve that is slightly larger than standard VSG, with an intestinal shortening procedure. The procedure shortens the intestinal length, combining the resection of the fundus and greater curvature, food consumed reaches the distal intestine more rapidly. It stimulates the cells in this region to release incretins that alter hunger and satiety. The SIPS/SADI-S procedure provides an efficacious procedure that offers improved quality of life, adequate intake and relies on the passage of ingested food into the faecal stream.
SIPS/SADI-S bariatric surgeryis an alternative to gastric bypass which gives similar results with less long term adverse effects than bypass and relatively simple and effective revision procedure for sleeve gastrectomy patients who have regained weight or not done well with their initial weight loss.
For people who are obese and have type 2 diabetes, bariatric surgery can improve their overall health and can greatly reduce the risk of heart disease, and death from heart attacks and strokes.
To find out if you qualify for bariatric surgery, you must consult with a bariatric surgeon.
