Am I a Suitable Candidate for Weight Loss Surgery
According to a 2014-15 study, more than 63 percent of the adult population in Australia is obese, which explains the increasing number of people turning to bariatric surgery. The Australian Medical Association recognizes bariatric surgery as a long-term weight loss solution that can help both adults and adolescents bring their lives back on track. Most people who are battling obesity, however, are unsure about whether weight loss surgery is a suitable option for them, and therefore, procrastinate the step.
To ensure you don’t delay the decision, here’s all you need to know about the criteria for different bariatric procedures:
Gastric Bypass Candidacy
Gastric bypass is for patients who:
- Have a BMI of 40 or more
- Have a BMI of 35 and suffer from one or more obesity-related comorbid disorders
- Have tried exercising and other options to reduce weight
- Do not suffer from any other health condition that causes weight gain
Sleeve Gastrectomy Candidacy
Sleeve gastrectomy is for patients who fulfill the below criteria:
- Have a BMI equal to or exceeding 40.
- The patient must have tried alternate measures to lose weight without any success
- Must not have any other medical condition that results in excessive weight gain
NOTE: Those who have a BMI between 30 to 40 and suffer from one or more obesity-related comorbid health conditions are also ideal candidates for sleeve gastrectomy.
