Life after Weight Loss Surgery
Weight loss surgery provides an effective solution to overcome obesity and minimize the risk of obesity-related health problems, provided the patient is willing to embrace an array of positive lifestyle changes, such as modifying their diet and incorporating exercise routines. Although some of these lifestyle changes begin before the surgery, the results and the long-term effectiveness of the procedure are largely influenced by the patient’s willingness to follow the aftercare guidelines. The experts at Perth Surgical and Bariatrics provide tailored treatment plans, along with undivided focus and care to help patients achieve their weight loss goals and lead a healthy life after the procedure.
Diet and Exercise
Modifying diet after weight loss surgery is crucial to the success of any bariatric procedure. Patients who are unwilling to modify their diet, are not able to achieve expected weight loss. Post surgery, you will have multiple consultations with our dietician, as part of our behavioural change program, and it is important that you see her regularly as scheduled. She will create a diet plan that becomes effective immediately after surgery, and it is tailored to your specific nutritional needs. Some important tips to remember include:
- Chew your food thoroughly
- Avoid foods with high sugar and fat content
- Stay away from alcohol
- Eliminate grazing and snacking between meals
- Avoid tobacco products and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
Gastric bypass patients will also want to avoid drinking water or any fluids with meals, as it may cause dumping syndrome, or satiate your hunger before you have eaten enough to fulfill your daily nutritional needs.
Exercise after weight loss surgery is also vital to both short-term and long-term weight-loss goals. Begin with plenty of walking post procedure, and continue to increase the magnitude of exercises in the medium and long term. A comprehensive exercise regimen can enhance weight loss as it helps burn off extra calories, and build muscle.
Support groups have proven efficient in long term weight loss. We have an online closed and private support group on facebook which is exclusive to our patients only. This support group will help answer any questions you may have about your weight loss journey, and will introduce you to valuable tips and advice from those who have been there before.
Pregnancy after Surgery
We have had a few patients who have become pregnant after a weight loss surgery procedure, however, it is very important you avoid pregnancy for at least 18 months after procedure. Kindly speak to us before deciding whether to become pregnant.
